Getting into the Christmas Spirit

Being on a shopping ban has left me with little to blog about and a lot of extra time on my hands. Thinking about next year and my upcoming vacation (destination: TOP SECRET) is getting me closer to December 26th. Actually, I’ve also started my Christmas shopping early and have crossed some big ticket items off my list and also, found some Christmas spirit. Let’s start with the ugly Christmas sweater:

Fashion is Abloom!

Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2010

I remember wearing flower print dresses as a kid but now, they’re a hit on runways for Spring/Summer 2010.  With dresses, skirts, tops, and even shorts in floral print, there’s so many ways to incorporate the floral print.  I got inspired to write this post after my BFF asked me where to find a cute floral print dress.  And now, I find myself wanting to buy one too.  There are too many pretty ones to pick from.

I can’t wait for spring when real flowers start blooming and the weather starts to warm up.  Then I can finally pack away my sweaters and cardigans and take out my summer dresses and shorts.  I can hardly wait!  And my least favourite part of end of winter/beginning of spring?  Stupid daylight savings… slept in again!

Oh yes, and my newest addition to my wardrobe:

$85.00 CDN from Aritzia

Talula Intarsia Sweater in grey (from Aritzia).  Against my BFF’s trusted advice, I bought this sweater.  I am wearing it right now and I don’t regret it.  I am sorry but it was too comfy to pass up.

My Week of Shopping Damage

I went shopping a few times over the last week and I did a lot of damage.  I got some good basics but I find myself already gravitating to the summer clothes.  American Eagle has come out with their spring collection which is filled with great basics and cute shorts.  Aritzia is definitely gearing up for the Olympics and I finally caved and bought one of their 2010 hoodies.  And I ALWAYS have a weakness for Urban Outifitters.  Why can’t they have a bigger store??

Anyways, here’s the damage:

AE cargo short $44.50 CDN

I know it’s not summer yet but I couldn’t help it.  I accidently wore my Holliste cargo shorts to the point where there was a hole in the crotch and these ones are almost the same but with cuter flower zipper pulls.

AE Shirt Tail Tank in Ebony and Navy 2 for $30 CDN

I love these tanks!  They’re so soft and so wearable and basic.  And affordable!  They’re not as low cut as advertised on their website so you don’t need to wear it with a bandeau bra.  I may have to go back and buy some more.

AE Boyfit Cropped Jeans $49.50 CDN

These boyfriend fit jeans are definitely not as soft as my Current/Elliot jeans but I really liked the way they were destroyed.  I had tried the destroyed Current/Elliots and almost bought them except I didn’t like the position and size of the holes.  Yes, I am picky.  But I saved money.

Fletcher by Lyell Dress from UO $78.00 CDN

Fletcher by Lyell Dress from UO $78.00 CDN

I just watched 500 Days of Summer and I fell in love with Zooey Deschanel’s (Summer) 50’s inspired wardrobe.  The movie itself wasn’t that good but I loved her clothes and I had to run out and buy this dress the next day.  I will wear it with my Keds this summer.  🙂

Make Up Forever HD Primer, $37 CDN

I am undecided about this primer as of now.  If I love it or hate it, I will write a review on it but the one plus side is that it is twice as much product as the Benefit one I was using for only $3 more.

Park Life for Aritzia 2010 Hoodie $98 CDN

Aritzia came out with the same hoody but shorter and in a dark heather grey.  I had to have it.  The last Bachelorette Jillian Harris is a fan of this hoody and wore it on one of the episodes.  Who wouldn’t love the Quatchi in the pocket?  Can’t see it?  Look closely, or go to Aritzia.

Ninewest Flat $34.99 CDN

Just uploading these pictures is making my wallet hurt.  There’s still another dress that I bought at UO that I couldn’t find on their website.  But it is the most beautiful shade of blue.  I will post a picture of it when I find it on their website or if I find the time to take a picture of myself wearing it.

Retro Club Monaco

Club Monaco is bringing back their Club Crest logo.  I remember wearing their crested logo on an oversized sweatshirt (in several diferent colours) with leggings back in elementary school.  I was waay too cool.  I even have a picture of myself in in my navy blue Club Monaco sweater.  Don’t laugh.  It was hip back then!  (Well, I thought so anyway)  They even had a Club Monaco for Kids store during that time.  But I got mine adult size for extra oversized coolness.

Here I am in our school library. I was pretty darn cool obviously.

I’m not sure if this is going to be a big hit.  The brand has changed so much over the years that this kind of shirt/sweatshirt doesn’t really reflect their label anymore.  Nothing from their current line is even close to sweatshirt material. You can check out this retro look in the Robson Street and Pacific Centre Club Monaco stores.

This is the kind of look I think is typical of Club Monaco.

But I guess they're branching out... this sweater is cashmere though.

Aritzia’s 25th Anniversary Sale

Aritzia is having a 25th Anniversary Sale and they’re making it sound like the biggest sale ever but I don’t think it’s going to beat their postcard sale where everything was on sale for at least 20% off. I think even their Marc by Marc Jacobs was on sale for 30% off. I may go check this out today or tomorrow and have a recap post. I’ve read on forums that they’ve picked up some Current/Elliots for $99 or $149 so there’s probably a few good deals on denims for those that go early.

**EDIT on November 23, 2009

So I went on Friday just to check out the sale and what kind of deals there were.  There were a LOT of jeans on sale. I didn’t look too hard but the Citizens and 7FAM were all 25% off. I tried on a pair of Citizen jeggings just for the hell of it and they were pretty darn comfortable. I may have to pick myself up a pair come Boxing Day if they are on sale again. Most items were 10% off like all clothing by Wilfred, TNA, and Talula brand. But if you buy a lot from their those brands regularly, then I guess it’s worth it. I’ve been on the hunt for a good long winter coat or jacket and was spying the long black TNA parka with the magnetic buttons and fur trim hood. It’s been a regular in the collection for the last few years but I haven’t needed it until this year. However, I’m not a fan of the magnetic buttons near the wrist of the sleeves just because it tends to do funny things to watches. I know this because my friend has the shorter version of this coat and it definitely does funny things to her watch. On Saturday, I saw the TNA boyrfriend fit down-filled parka which had just come out and it didn’t have magnetic buttons. I tried it on and it is SUPER warm because of the down and NO MAGNETIC BUTTONS! YAY! I figured I would buy it regular price anyway so I bought with the 10% off. 🙂

It looks a lot like this jacket except it’s down-filled instead of sherpa-lined and it’s grey instead of green. Although they also had a green and a black version of my jacket. I love the drawstring on the waist because it makes the jacket have a more feminine shape than the black jacket I originally wanted. This costed a “bargain” price of $256.50 before taxes instead of $285.

Jimmy Choo for H&M Recap

This is what I would look like if I were homeless… This has to be one of my most unstylish days.  At one point, the blanket was wrapped around my legs to cover my freezing butt because I was silly enough to wear Lululemons because I thought they’d be comfortable.

So I started lining up at 4am for the Jimmy Choo for H&M collection at Pacific Centre, Vancouver.  It was dark and boy, was it ever cold!  Luckily for us, it was not raining, which is strange for Vancouver weather.  We thought we were prepared for the line up but we were wrong.  There were people there with sleeping bags and chairs and snow pants and snow boots.  There was even a girl with a propane powered space heater.  Apparently, the people at the very front of the line had started lining up at 5pm the evening before the sale.  And we thought we would be close to the front; there were already about 90 people in front of us when we arrived at 4am!

At around 9:15am, staff handed out different coloured bracelets to the first 160 people in line.  The bracelets represented what time we would be able to shop; our blue bracelets meant we were able to shop at 11:30am so we had to wait around in the store for another hour and a half after the opening.  The ladies garment collection and the men’s collection was a free for all basically, which meant that the racks were bare within 5 minutes of opening.  The ladies shoes, bags, and accessories had barriers around the area and about ten security guards around to watch the frantic shoppers.  When your time came up, you only had 10 minutes to shop the collection in groups of 20 people at a time.  Each customer had a personal shopper to help them find sizes and so everything was quite organized for such a highly anticipated sale.

I ended up buying the flat gladiator sandals, the black studded flats, the medium-sized leather bag with a flap, and the zipper clutch wallet.  I spent about $450 in total so I think it was quite a deal.  I was surprised that even though we were about the 6th group of 20 people that got into the shoe section, I was able to find everything I wanted in my size.  I don’t think I’d have been able to walk in the 4-inch cage sandals I tried on, but it was nice that I was able to try the size I wanted.  And the people who didn’t receive bracelets still got to shop the shoes after 12:15pm.  It looked like there were still many shoe boxes left after our group finished shopping.  I was exhausted after the sale and still had a concert fundraiser in the evening to help with so I took a much needed nap.

Rip off my own jeans update!

So last post, i announced that i would rip my own jeans and show you guys what it looks like. i found a video on youtube that shows you how to distress your own jeans. here are the tools you need:

  • pair of old jeans
  • hard object like a rock or bottle
  • pen knife or exacto knife
  • cheese grater
  • lint roller (my own suggestion)

this video is a pretty good tutorial of how to distress your own jeans and i referred to it myself when doing my own jeans. my jeans are an old pair of cropped american eagle jeans i bought at winners maybe two years ago for about $20. i wasn’t going to be too sad if i screwed them up. i wouldn’t experiment with any of my designer jeans. the lint roller is used to pick up all the little pieces of lint that will definitely be falling off when you are grating your jeans with the cheese grater. oh yeah, and be careful with the pen knife. it is definitely not a toy and definitely sharp or this might happen…

the trick to it is to grate slow and not press too hard because you’ll just put a hole in the denim. if you grate slowly, you’ll get to the threads and they’ll still connect. here’s what the jeans  looked like before:

and here’s what they look like now:

my verdict is that you can not recreate the perfect rips that current/elliot make without spending over $200 for the real thing but my attempt was not bad. i’m going to be wearing mine proudly in the summer. i even have my own battle wound to show for my hard work. anyone else going to try to destroy their old jeans? show me your attempts!
